Welcome to our community garden Blog. The community garden was started in July 2015 and formally opened on Wednesday 15th July by Mr Tim Jackson in dedication to his wife Marion, who had a long association with St Mary’s both as a parent and as a governor.
The initial idea for the community garden came from Mrs Charman who wanted a space for children to be able to experience first hand how plants grow, and the science involved in all of the different stages of plant growth. Mrs Charman shared her idea at our last Parent Workshop and parents were very enthusiastic in their support and ideas. Children worked on garden designs for their homework in June and those ideas became a reality within weeks. The garden was created
using recycled materials, adapted and decorated by the children. Thank you to the huge team of volunteers who helped build and plant this garden. It is open to everyone in the community and all are welcome to come and work there or just sit and enjoy the view and solitude. The garden is situated by the front entrance to the school.

Sunday 2nd August
Thank you so much to everyone who has been watering, weeding and caring for the garden. It is wonderful to see it growing and flourishing.
We were very excited to see signs of life in the pond. There is often some larvae wriggling near the surface, but today we spotted something a bit bigger – a frog! Suggested names are Dennis (as in hopper!), Malcolm and Lucky. Let us know what you spot in the garden.
Wednesday 15th July, 2015 – Official Opening!
This evening was a beautiful sunny and still evening, perfect weather for the opening of the garden. A large crowd of parents and excited children all gathered at the front of the school for the official opening. Mrs McGlew welcomed everyone and thanked all who had been involved in the creation of the garden. Mr Jackson then cut the ribbon and encouraged everyone to come and explore the garden. The children needed no encouragement and wasted no time in dipping their fingers in the pond and examining the plants.
Friday 3rd July, 2015 – Getting the garden ready
Wednesday 15th July, 6pm. Everybody very welcome!
As part of the “Moving On” transition learning journey, the children have been working hard in their new class groups to design and decorate tree stump seats, making wind chimes and planting hanging baskets and other plants in our community garden. We hope you have noticed things taking shape outside by our visitors’ entrance. We still welcome any enthusiastic volunteers who might be able to help during afternoons next week so that we are all ready for our grand opening planned for Wednesday 15th July at our open evening barbecue event. Thanks to Mrs Charman for her vision and enthusiasm with this project.
