Stunning Start – Performance Poet Visit by Rebecca Palmer Willow Class
Ian Bland, a well know poet and author came to visit on Friday 23rd September. He started with a whole school presentation of his work before working with each class and finishing with a show to parents. Thank you to those who came and supported. Ian also donated a selection of his books to the school for us to enjoy.
The buzz and excitement that his visit created could be felt well into this week, with the children sharing poems, talking about beats, alliteration, rhyming and rhythm. His visit created a truly ‘Stunning start’, launching the schools whole school learning journey about ‘Speaking out’. This tangible love of poetry and performing in front of an audience will be built upon throughout the term
When talking to the children about their experiences with Ian and his wonderfully fun workshops, they told me the following:
Tia: ‘It was amazing! Ian told us that he would love to come again because the children at St Mary’s really listened and were fun.’
Rosie: ‘He was really funny and had a hilarious sense of humour.’
Ahlia: ‘ His Poems were really good.’
Ashleigh: ‘ I liked our class workshop because of the alliteration we had fun with – four slithering snails sucking up slugs!’
All the children said that is was the best stunning start!
Kaia, Megan and Amelia from Maple class were able to perform their poem’s actions to me and were smiling all the way through.

Put your leg up in the air
Put your hands on your head!
The others loved chanting the first few lines of the Dinner Lady Dance Poem, Ian taught them..
Eat your dinner
Your last chance
Do the dinner lady dance..
